My Story

I draw and paint to capture moments of light and energy. In a world that is often preoccupied with fear and negativism, I strive to instill feelings of optimism and joy. The focus of my work is figurative and expressing people’s unique character, as well as their environments.

At this point my favorite tools are; charcoal, ink, pastel and watercolor. I love the mark making ability of charcoal and ink. Watercolor paints are particularly suited to both capturing light and movement. This medium with its transparency and bright colors breathes life into my subjects. I also love the spontaneity and unpredictability of watercolor. The variety of mark making effects from tranquil washes to strident lines is another reason why this medium is ideally suited to my work.

I feel my artistic journey is just beginning and hope it will lead to many adventures in the future. This feeling of adventure and exploration is what gets me up in the morning.

My Studio

I work on Bainbridge Island, in Washington State surrounded by an oasis of greenery.

The studio’s name is “TinCAN”. The “Tin” part comes from the corrugated metal siding on its exterior walls. The “CAN” part is because my original home was in Canada and just as importantly because it’s a refuge where I “can” create.
